A wood-burning or pellet stove brings warmth and comfort into your home and can cut your heating bills – but since 2024, strict new rules apply: the German BImSchV II ordinance and the EU ECODESIGN regulation set minimum efficiencies and maximum emission limits, and not every older stove may still be sold. 2026 is the right time to upgrade – with modern technology that meets every standard. Wood Stoves vs. Pellet Stoves: Which One Suits You?

The choice between a classic wood-burning stove and a modern pellet stove depends on your building, your budget and your lifestyle.

Wood-Burning Stoves (Log Stoves)

How they work: Logs are loaded into the combustion chamber; the burn is controlled by manual (or automatic) air supply. Heat radiates into the room through the steel body.

Costs:

  • Purchase: €2,500–6,000 (depending on size, material, brand)
  • Installation (setup, flue pipe, chimney sweep approval): €500–2,000

How they work: Wood pellets (compressed sawdust) are fed automatically from a hopper; combustion is fully automatic. Heat is distributed via water or air.

BImSchV II and ECODESIGN: What Do They Mean?

BImSchV Stage II (German ordinance limiting particulate and NOx emissions), in force since 2024:

ECODESIGN (EU energy-efficiency regulation):

An oversized stove runs inefficiently (constant throttling); an undersized one cannot cover the heat demand. How to calculate:

Rule of thumb: roughly 1 kW of heat output per 10 m² of floor area – e.g. 100 m² of living space → a 10 kW stove.
