Air-to-water heat pumps: heating with ambient energy

An air-to-water heat pump extracts heat from the outside air and transfers it to the heating water – for radiators or underfloor heating and, depending on the model, for domestic hot water. It needs neither a borehole nor a well and is therefore suitable for new builds and renovations alike.

Our range includes air-to-water heat pumps from Bosch (Compress), Viessmann (Vitocal), AUX, Gree and Sevra with heating capacities from about 4 to 17 kW.

Monobloc or split?

  • Monobloc: The complete refrigerant circuit is inside the outdoor unit. Only water pipes lead into the house – which simplifies installation.
  • Split: Outdoor and indoor units are connected by refrigerant lines. The indoor unit transfers the heat to the heating system; the refrigerant lines may only be installed and charged by certified contractors.

What to consider when choosing

  • Heating load: The right capacity results from a heating load calculation for your building – not from the living area alone.
  • Power supply: Larger units often require three-phase power (400 V). The connection type is shown on every product page.
  • Flow temperature: Radiators in older buildings often need higher flow temperatures than underfloor heating. Check the operating limits of the model.
  • Efficiency: The energy efficiency class and key values are shown on the EU energy label on every product page.

German KfW heating subsidy 2026

When an old heating system is replaced by a heat pump, KfW supports owner-occupiers in Germany through programme 458 "Heating subsidy for private individuals – residential buildings". According to KfW (as of 28 Sept 2026):

  • Basic subsidy: 30 % of eligible costs
  • Climate speed bonus: 16 % – decreasing by 4 percentage points every six months from 1 Feb 2027
  • Income bonus: staggered by taxable household income, up to 40 %
  • Maximum total subsidy of 80 % for a taxable household income of up to €30,000
  • Eligible costs: up to €28,000 for the first residential unit of a single-family home

Please check the exact conditions, for example regarding when to apply, directly with KfW before purchasing.

Installation

Planning, hydraulic integration and commissioning belong in the hands of a heating contractor. They determine the heating load, design the system and confirm the professional installation required for the subsidy.
