More about air purifiers
Filter Technologies: HEPA, Activated Carbon, UV-C
HEPA filters (High Efficiency Particulate Air):
- H13 — 99.95% capture rate for particles ≥ 0.3 µm (pollen, dust, PM2.5, bacteria, large viral droplets).
- H14 — 99.995% capture rate, stricter, recommended for allergy sufferers and medical environments.
HEPA is the standard for serious air cleaning. Cheap "ionic" filters do not perform reliably.
Activated carbon — filters odors (cooking fumes, smoke, urine) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). HEPA alone only filters particles.
UV-C lamp — kills germs, viruses, and fungal spores in the airflow. Useful during cold/flu season or in homes with infants or allergy sufferers. UV-C only works when air passes the lamp with sufficient dwell time.
Sizing: Air Changes per Hour
ACH (Air Changes per Hour) tells you how often the room's air is fully exchanged. ACH 3–4 = standard cleaning. ACH 5+ = intensive cleaning.
Guideline by room size:
- 25 m² → 75–100 m³/h airflow
- 50 m² → 150–200 m³/h
- 100 m²+ → 300+ m³/h
Undersized = too slow. Oversized = higher power use and potential fan noise.
Noise and Power Consumption
At maximum fan speed: ~45–65 dB (office background). Most units have 3 fan levels or an auto mode for quiet nights. Mid-class units (50 m²) draw ~25–50 W normal use, 60–80 W on highest setting — typically 0.6–1.2 kWh/day, around €2–5 per month.
Maintenance: Filter Replacement
- HEPA filter: 6–12 months (replacement cost €20–60).
- Activated carbon: 6–9 months (darkens when saturated).
- UV-C lamp: ~8,000–10,000 operating hours = 2–3 years at daily use (replacement ~€15–30).
Regular replacement is not optional — a clogged filter drops performance dramatically.
Brand Quality
AUX, Gree, Levira — reliable manufacturers with established service networks. All units carry CE certificates. Look for genuine HEPA certification (not "HEPA-style").
