Which Boiler for Which Use?

Electric boilers are the simplest option for apartments, holiday homes, or extensions without a gas connection. No chimney, no fuel storage, silent and emission-free on site. Ideal as main heating for smaller, well-insulated units or as supplementary heating.

Pellet and wood boilers are the sustainable choice: renewable fuel, high efficiency, often with app control and automatic pellet feed. Many models qualify for German BAFA/BEG subsidies — check eligibility per case.

Gas condensing boilers recover condensation heat from flue gases and reach very high efficiency. Compact wall-mounted or floor-standing units, suited to existing buildings with gas supply.

Brand Quality: Bosch, Viessmann, Prity

Bosch — broad heating program, solid German engineering with long-term spare-parts supply.

Viessmann — one of the established names in heating technology, long-lasting boilers, high efficiency, premium control electronics.

Selection Criteria

  • Output (kW) — based on the heat load of your building. Rule of thumb: well-insulated single-family home around 5–10 kW, uninsulated old building 15–25 kW. Use a professional heat-load calculation for accuracy.
  • Efficiency — modern condensing and pellet boilers reach around 90–98 % efficiency. Look for a good energy label.
  • Buffer tank — usually required for pellet/wood boilers; also useful when combined with solar or a heat pump.
  • Controls — modern units offer weekly programs and often app control.

Installation and Service

Boiler installation requires a licensed heating contractor — flue system, gas line, and commissioning need expertise and, in Germany, sign-off from the district chimney sweep. Annual maintenance per manufacturer specifications maintains efficiency and warranty coverage.
