Multi-split air conditioners: several rooms, one outdoor unit

With a multi-split air conditioner, a single outdoor unit supplies two or more indoor units. Bedrooms, children's rooms and living areas can be cooled and heated independently – with only one unit on the façade or balcony. Here you will find multi-split outdoor units, ready-made combination sets and matching indoor units from Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Toshiba, Bosch, Gree, AUX and Nippon.

The right system in three steps

  1. Determine the capacity per room. Room size, sun exposure and insulation decide how much cooling capacity each indoor unit needs. Our air conditioner size guide shows how to calculate it.
  2. Choose the outdoor unit. The outdoor unit determines how many indoor units can be connected and how much total capacity is available. At Bosch, for example, "Climate 5000 M 53/2" stands for 5.3 kW and up to two indoor units, "79/3" for 7.9 kW and up to three indoor units.
  3. Combine compatible indoor units. Indoor units must come from the same manufacturer and be approved for the chosen multi-split outdoor unit. A single indoor unit only works together with a matching outdoor unit.

Advantages – and what to watch out for

  • Only one outdoor unit for several rooms: less space required and a tidier façade.
  • Each room can be switched on and off individually and set to its own temperature.
  • All rooms depend on one outdoor unit: if it fails, every connected room is affected.
  • If all indoor units run at full load at the same time, they share the outdoor unit's capacity.

Installation by a certified contractor

Outdoor and indoor units are connected by refrigerant lines. Work on the refrigerant circuit – charging, leak testing, commissioning – may only be carried out by certified contractors under the EU F-gas Regulation. Please plan the installation with a refrigeration and air-conditioning contractor near you.

Frequently asked questions about air conditioners

How many BTU do I need for my room?

Use the manufacturer’s “recommended room size” on the unit as a guide: approx. 20 m² → 9,000 BTU class, approx. 30 m² → 12,000, up to approx. 50 m² → 18,000. For south-facing or attic rooms choose the next larger class — the climate finder does the choosing for you.

May I install a split air conditioner myself?

No. Units with fluorinated refrigerant (e.g. R32) must be installed by a certified specialist company in accordance with EU Regulation 2024/573. You can get the installation accessories for your installer from us.

Can an air conditioner also heat?

Yes — modern inverter units heat very efficiently. The SCOP value shows heating efficiency: a SCOP of 4.6 means 1 kWh of electricity becomes 4.6 kWh of heat.

How does delivery work?

Shipping within the EU is free from €100 order value — below that, the exact cost is shown at checkout (unfortunately we cannot deliver to islands). Items in stock usually arrive in approx. 4–6 business days; otherwise approx. 4–8 business days — Bosch and Prity units that are not in stock take approx. 2 weeks. For split air conditioners and heat pumps containing F-gas, the delivery time starts when you send us the certified-installer documents. Compact units ship as parcels; large units by freight carrier with advance phone notice. You receive tracking by e-mail.
