Split air conditioners: quiet cooling and efficient heating

A split air conditioner consists of two parts: a wall-mounted indoor unit and an outdoor unit, connected by refrigerant and condensate lines. Because the compressor works outside, the indoor unit is considerably quieter and more efficient than a portable air conditioner. Modern inverter split units cool in summer and heat in spring and autumn using the heat pump principle.

In this category you will find split sets and individual indoor units from Daikin, Bosch, Mitsubishi Electric and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Toshiba, Gree and other manufacturers – in capacity classes from about 2.0 to 7.0 kW (roughly 7,000 to 24,000 BTU).

How much capacity do I need?

Room size, sun exposure, ceiling height and insulation are decisive. A unit that is too small runs constantly at full load; a unit that is too large cycles frequently and dehumidifies less effectively. You will find a step-by-step calculation in our air conditioner size guide.

Set or individual indoor unit?

A set contains the indoor and outdoor unit and is the right choice for a single room. Individual indoor units are intended for multi-split systems or as replacements – they only work with a matching outdoor unit from the same manufacturer. To supply several rooms from one outdoor unit, choose a multi-split air conditioner.

Efficiency and running costs

How economical a unit is can be seen from the SEER (cooling) and SCOP (heating) values and the energy efficiency class on the EU energy label. You will find these details on every product page. Our guide to air conditioner running costs shows what operation costs in everyday use.

Installation and rented apartments

Under the EU F-gas Regulation, work on the refrigerant circuit may only be carried out by certified contractors – please plan the installation with a refrigeration and air-conditioning contractor. If you rent, you will usually need your landlord's consent for the outdoor unit. More on this in our guide air conditioner in an apartment.

Frequently asked questions about air conditioners

How many BTU do I need for my room?

Use the manufacturer’s “recommended room size” on the unit as a guide: approx. 20 m² → 9,000 BTU class, approx. 30 m² → 12,000, up to approx. 50 m² → 18,000. For south-facing or attic rooms choose the next larger class — the climate finder does the choosing for you.

May I install a split air conditioner myself?

No. Units with fluorinated refrigerant (e.g. R32) must be installed by a certified specialist company in accordance with EU Regulation 2024/573. You can get the installation accessories for your installer from us.

Can an air conditioner also heat?

Yes — modern inverter units heat very efficiently. The SCOP value shows heating efficiency: a SCOP of 4.6 means 1 kWh of electricity becomes 4.6 kWh of heat.

How does delivery work?

Shipping within the EU is free from €100 order value — below that, the exact cost is shown at checkout (unfortunately we cannot deliver to islands). Items in stock usually arrive in approx. 4–6 business days; otherwise approx. 4–8 business days — for Bosch units currently approx. 8–11 business days. For split air conditioners and heat pumps containing F-gas, the delivery time starts when you send us the certified-installer documents. Compact units ship as parcels; large units by freight carrier with advance phone notice. You receive tracking by e-mail.
