Types: Air, Water, Ground Source

Air-source heat pumps are the simplest and most cost-effective option. Outdoor units extract heat from ambient air. Two designs: monoblock units (indoor and outdoor parts in a single compact unit, ideal for renovations) and split heat pumps (separate indoor and outdoor units with refrigerant circuit, higher efficiency, quieter operation).

Water-source heat pumps use groundwater — highest efficiency but expensive to install (deep borehole or spring access required).

Ground-source heat pumps use earth heat through borehole. Highest year-round efficiency but highest installation budget.

For single-family homes needing renovation, an air-source heat pump is typically the most economical choice.

Brand Quality: Daikin, Bosch, Viessmann

Daikin Altherma — Japanese classic, split and monoblock variants, broad capacity range.

Bosch Compress — Solid German engineering, well-serviced, R290 propane models available since 2024.

Viessmann Vitocal — Premium segment, efficient even in harsh climates, integrates with existing heating controls.

New Build vs. Renovation

New build: heat pump + underfloor heating = ideal combination, low flow temperatures, very high efficiency.

Renovation: check your radiators. Low-temperature heat pumps need larger heating surfaces. High-temperature heat pumps (e.g. Daikin Altherma 3 H HT up to 70 °C at -15 °C) bridge the gap when radiators are small.

Lifespan and Maintenance

A properly installed heat pump runs reliably for 20+ years. Maintenance every 2 years (filters, seals, refrigerant check). Significantly less maintenance than older oil boilers.
